This is a small dance studio where everyone is feeling like a small family. This is 2 nd studio my daughter danced with. We lived in Milpitas where she went to a bigger dance studio that has more dance floor and window see through setup classroom.
Stefanie C. This is the first American dance studio I ever enrolled kids in and I was also taken aback and sticker shocked by this whole June recital madness why? However, they ALL do it, and at Sterling you can at least be sure that solid skills have been learned to show off.
Other cons, to get that out of the way, were a strange bumpy floor that got painted, but never really improved all the fixtures were, in fact, strangely and permanently broken — from the doors to the lights, the chairs, the blinds, the toilets… you name it. There was no office; the instructor was the only staff member present at any given time, so communication was spotty at best.
One had to learn which rules were meant to be disregarded, e. To my relief, I soon noticed that everyone paid the teachers, they happily accepted all payments, and it never became an issue, so phew. Having said all that: this is a wonderful place if you want your child to actually learn to dance.
My youngest learned so much here in less than one year of instruction including e. Instructor Ashley was an absolute gem; I have never before or since seen such a great instructor for beginners. Ashley was peerless. Even this finale was instructional, though, as Ms. Ashley encouraged her little students to practice skipping and stop in freezes and poses they had learned or invented themselves, which were then duly considered, making the kids feel important and appreciated.
Despite the high brow location, tuition was reasonable and we traveling to the studio from the wrong side of the tracks were never ostracized or made to feel bad if we could not afford something — from fancy dance attire to the silly recital. Both my children and all other dancers I have seen there, from tots to teens to adults who applied a shred of commitment to their classes, really got well on their way to becoming « sterling» dancers in incredible time.
This is most important to me. In addition from sad consecutive experience elsewhere : one must also appreciate the general courtesy and reasonable rules.
There were actually chairs in the foyer, albeit in need of maintenance, and transporting family members were allowed to wait on the premises at the competition, you may very well get yelled at and thrown out not only of the room and adjoining hallway, but the entire building, leaving you to wonder what on Earth they might have in mind to do with your child in your absence.
Yes, all these things are commonplace at other institutions, foremost at the despicable « Joy of Dancing», a complete misnomer which deserves negative stars. We should have never moved North! If you want a quality education and pleasant atmosphere for yourself or your child, definitely come to Sterling. Debbie E. I was with my girlfriend looking for a dance studio and came across Sterling.

As Sterling approaches it's 21st anniversary, Director Darlene Thorne's philosophy is to stay small, keep teaching quality high and create a family atmosphere at the studio.
The proof of this is in the many students who have grown up at Sterling and even have returned after college to dance or teach there. We are not a dance factory where the main focus is on rehearsing all year for competitions at the expense of real technique training. We are a year-round school that emphasizes proper dance technique in Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Tap, Latin Ballroom in a fun, imaginative forum. You learn there, you grow up there, and you have family there. Speaking as a dancer who grew….
