Azalea houston

Hogg, who possessed a green thumb and created stunning gardens on her property over the years, is credited with bringing azaleas to Houston in She ultimately cultivated 39 azalea breeds over the years. Most of the blooms are located there near a mass of oak and pine trees that give just enough shade for the Formosa, Marcantha, Mrs. GG Gerbing, and Wakaebisu azaleas to thrive.

There is a pink and a white, both with large, late flowers, and the plants are a foot to a foot-and-a-half tall. If your garden is full of reliable hybrids, why not try native azaleas? These are deciduous but produce interesting, fragrant flowers. Austrinum produces clusters of yellow tubular flowers in early spring.

Canescens has pale pink flowers. Encore azaleas are within a 2- to 5-foot height range; have mounding, spreading or upright growth habits; and are evergreen. The Encores, too, have the same cultural needs we give our old reliables.

Encore azaleas flower on new wood, not on old wood as do many azaleas. Encores produce a heavy spring flush, followed by a period of new growth. Bloom cycles vary somewhat among the varieties, but typically blooms appear again in mid to late summer, then build to a fall flush. You can plant Encores almost anytime, but in summer, pay close attention to watering needs until the plants are established. Encore azaleas like the same culture as do traditional azaleas — filtered sunlight or bright shade; a moist but well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter; and a good layer of mulch.

Provide regular watering. Little additional fertilization is needed; use an azalea formula or an occasional application of fish emulsion. Leaf gall development is also favored by cool, moist weather.

Handpick and destroy affected leaves. Spray with Bayleton, Ferbam, Captan, or a fixed copper fungicide. Start spraying at end of bloom period and continue at 2- to 3-week intervals until mid-June. Brown or bronzed leaves, with tiny black fruiting bodies on the dead tissues.

Irregular and colored spots on leaf. Use Maneb, or Bayleton beginning at end of bloom period. Continue at 2-week intervals through growing season or as long as young leaves are present. Refer to Bayleton label for application intervals. Leaves turn yellow and plants are stunted. They do not respond favorably to water and fertilizer applications. No chemical control available. Other conditions mimic nematode injury; collect a soil sample from root zone for nematode analysis.

Check with your county Extension agent for details. Entire branches turn brown and die during the growing season. Look for evidence of bark splitting near base of limbs or at ground.

Use recommended varieties. Keep plants in good thrifty condition. Water regularly during late summer and fall.

Leaves turn light green to yellow, then creamy white between the veins; but veins remain green. Members treated to lunch and tour of their garden. March 17, — Jasper TX.
